Welcome to the next installment of Not All Seals Are Created Equal by ESP International. Today I want to talk a little bit about the oil and gas industry and specifically one of the common maintenance seals used in the industry. That being the pony rod seal.
The fact of the matter is when it comes to the hydraulic pumps and the various types of pumps in the oil and gas industry, whether it's a repaired maintenance, a shutdown, or worse yet an unplanned shutdown, downtime is very expensive and the ability to be able to get up and run quickly is absolutely critical.
The pony rod seal is one of those seals that has evolved, and in today's applications is one of the most reliable components in the frac pump. In particular, the reason for that is Parker’s patented design has come up with a single-piece seal that in essence acts as the oil seal and a wiper seal in one and it's a very tough durable seal.
Single-Piece Design & Durability
It's a very positive seal that eliminates the leaking of hydraulic oil, which a two-piece design is a common failure and it’s very tough. By being one piece, it's very easy to install, easy to take in and out, does not require snap rings because of the press-fit design or retaining plates or anything of that nature. The installation is really quite easy.
The biggest feature of the seal, though, is the high-temperature Parker Resilon® polyurethane material. The polyurethane material that is used for these pony rod seals is very durable, covers a wide temperature range for the application intended, the temperature is really a non-issue, and it has become a very reliable seal.
